I am less apalled by the people in these pictures and their (lack of?) lifestyle, than I am by certain commentaries in this thread, the users behind them, and their lack of common empathy. Scum comes in many kinds, and a lot of people have the resources to know better, but still don't.

It seems to me that they are anarchists rather than bums. To me they look mostly content and free from life's trappings. The photos have a rich and raw quality of the moment and express the freedom of the people represented, without judgment... unlike most the comments below.

These people - all of them - generally have some kind of mental defect. They can only exist in a society where its possible to eat without working. In the old agricultural society, they would have been beggars at best but more likely imprisoned at a work house.

I love these pictures. What I don't love is the hypocrisy and denseness of some of the people replying. Despite them, I can still appreciate the pictures for both their content and the artistic skill of them. This was a truly skilled photographer.

I saw a documentary on IFC that was very similar to the stuff in these pics. These ppl are train riders. Alot of them like the freedom it offers. I've been homeless before so I know it isn't easy. Sometimes getting a job is hard and discouraging so don't think that all homeless ppl don't want to.

If they are going to photograph homeless people in America...why choose a bunch of goth/emo kids who obviously chose to live that way. Go photograph all of the displaced families from Katrina, all of the homeless families forced to live in their cars, all of the former pyschiatric patients. :mellow
